Yes, its a great first stop. If you are coming from abroad its a likely arrival city for South Island destinations. It has city services, gardens, museums, good transport links and quick access to the Southern Alps and coast.

Layers, comfortable walking shoes, rain protection, sun protection, a warm hat and gloves for the mountains, and a reusable water bottle.

Is Christchurch expensive?

Yes it can be, it is moderate to very expensive for accommodation, restaurant meals, and locally organized tours. But you can also find many very decent free attractions, car hire is affordable as is the NZ$3 bus, and self-catering accommodation will bring the cost down considerably.
