Things to do in Melaka

Memories are built in Melaka. At high tide, the Melaka River brings in diesel, cinnamon, and competing sounds—loudspeakers from river cruises clashing with the mosque’s sunset call to prayer.

A ten-minute walk inland reveals Jonker Street. A man in a white singlet serves Nyonya laksa at 10 pm for RM7 ($1.50). The broth shines with a turmeric hue; the mint still holds the freshness of yesterday’s rain.

Up the hill, the A Famosa ruins bake chalk-white under the noon sun. Below, the Stadthuys glows a striking red, almost intense, contrasting with the black-and-white tiles of the nearby Cheng Hoon Teng temple.

Melaka isn’t your typical postcard-perfect town. Half the shophouses are empty. The drains smell of durian and decay. It’s genuine, though. A trishaw ride from Dutch Square to the Portuguese Settlement costs RM15 ($3.30) if you haggle, RM30 ($6.60) if you smile first.

The beaches everyone searches for online are an hour south in Klebang—coarse sand and brown water. The coconut shake stall sells iced cups for RM3.50 ($0.75) that taste like childhood memories. Visit for the history, but stay for the Melaka night market that starts at 6 pm, filling the air with scents of five-spice and pork fat until the power cuts out at 1 am.
