Aoraki/Mount Cook Alpine Village is a secluded settlement and the primary visitor center situated in the heart of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park on New Zealand’s South Island. It lies roughly midway between Christchurch (4.5 hours away) and Queenstown (3.5 hours away).

The village hosts the famous Hermitage Hotel, the only lodging in the park offering direct views of Aoraki, New Zealand’s tallest peak at 3,724 meters.

Located within New Zealand’s largest Gold Status International Dark Sky Reserve, the village serves as the starting point for the Hooker Valley Track, Glacier Explorers boat tours, and top-tier alpine hiking experiences.

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park (70,696 ha) is New Zealand’s premier alpine park, featuring the country’s tallest mountains and largest glaciers. Established as a national park in 1953, this rugged landscape of ice and rock is home to glaciers covering 40% of its area.

The park boasts 21 peaks exceeding 3000 m, including Aotearoa New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki / Mount Cook. Known for its exceptional natural beauty, the park is part of the internationally renowned Te WāhipounamuSouth West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of walks and hikes around the village and nearby areas, ranging from 10 minutes to 4 hours, offering options for all skill levels.
