Things to do in New Zealand

New Zealand—known as Aotearoa, meaning “land of the long white cloud” in te Reo Māori—is an incredibly beautiful country filled with towering snow-capped mountains and untouched rainforests, crystal-clear lakes teeming with trout, and turquoise ocean bays dotted with wooded islands.

It boasts glaciers and fiords, geysers and volcanoes. You don’t need to travel far to see New Zealand’s stunning scenery—an Alpine peak might be just a short drive from a barren desert, and a pristine beach could be only minutes away from a bustling city. The country is home to kauri forests and kiwi fruit orchards, modern cosmopolitan cities, and remote sheep farms. This abundant land produces some of the finest food and wine in the world.

All of this is spread across New Zealand’s two main islands of similar size, the North and South Islands, along with Stewart Island at the southern tip and several uninhabited islands, some of which are nature reserves.

The North Island has the largest population but still features vast stretches of wild landscapes. The South Island is even more striking—the “Middle Earth” backdrop from the film adaptation of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

New Zealand is a place that feels both like a land forgotten by time, uninhabited until relatively recently, and one that leaves a lasting impression. But above all, it was originally the land of the Maori.
