Florence (Italian: Firenze) is the capital and largest city of the Tuscany region in Italy, with a population of 361,625 as of 2026. It also serves as the capital of the metropolitan province of the same name, which has 988,494 residents.
During the medieval period, Florence was a hub for European trade and finance and was among the wealthiest cities of its time. Many scholars regard it as the birthplace of the Renaissance, transforming it into a key center for art, culture, commerce, politics, economy, and finance.
In this era, Florence gained significant influence across Italy, Europe, and beyond. Its political history is marked by the rule of the influential Medici family and various religious and republican uprisings.
Between 1865 and 1871, Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The Florentine dialect is the foundation of standard Italian and became the cultural language throughout Italy, largely due to the renowned works of Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, Giovanni Boccaccio, Niccolò Machiavelli, and Francesco Guicciardini.
