Things to do and see in Venice
Venice is a city located in northeastern Italy and serves as the capital of the Veneto region. It is constructed on a collection of 126 islands, separated by open water and canals, with 472 bridges connecting parts of the city.
These islands lie within the shallow Venetian Lagoon, a protected bay situated between the mouths of the Po and Piave rivers (more precisely between the Brenta and the Sile).
As of 2025, the city proper (comune of Venice) has a population of 249,466,[2] with nearly 50,000 residents living in the historic island city of Venice (centro storico), while the majority live on the mainland (terraferma), and around 25,000 inhabit other islands in the lagoon (estuario).
Along with Padua and Treviso, Venice forms part of the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), a statistical metropolitan region with a combined population of 2.6 million.[4]
