5-Day Perhentian Islands Itinerary: Snorkeling, Island Hopping & Budget Tips

Plan your perfect trip with this Perhentian Islands itinerary. Discover snorkeling spots, best time to visit, and budget tips for island hopping in paradise.

The water around the Perhentian Islands is so clear you can count the fish from the dock. I did exactly that on my first morning, sitting on a wooden jetty at Coral Bay with a coffee in hand, watching schools of parrotfish drift past. That moment summed up why this archipelago off the northeast coast of Malaysia deserves a spot on every Southeast Asia itinerary. After four trips here, I have fine-tuned a Perhentian Islands itinerary that balances relaxation, snorkeling, island hopping, and a touch of off-the-beaten-path adventure. Whether you have five days or a week, this guide covers everything from the Kuala Besut ferry to the best budget travel hacks.

Why the Perhentian Islands?

Unlike the crowded resorts of Langkawi or the high-rises of Penang, the Perhentians feel like a throwback to old-school tropical travel. Power cuts happen. Wi‑Fi is patchy. And that is exactly why you come here. The two main islands, Perhentian Kecil (Small Island) and Perhentian Besar (Big Island), offer some of Malaysia’s finest snorkeling spots, with turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and neon coral gardens just metres from the sand. This Perhentian Islands travel guide will help you pick which side suits your style and how to make the most of every day.

Getting There: Kuala Besut Ferry & Logistics

Your Perhentian Islands Itinerary begins at the Kuala Besut jetty, a two-hour drive from Kota Bharu airport. Public buses run from the airport to the jetty, but a shared minivan (around 15 MYR) is easier.

Ferries depart daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, weather permitting. The ride takes 30–45 minutes depending on which island you choose. Tickets cost about 70 MYR return. Buy them at the counter, no need to book ahead outside peak season. I recommend taking the earliest ferry to beat the crowds and claim a good spot on the beach.

Once you arrive, you will find accommodation on both islands. For a full list of planning resources, check out our other detailed travel planners for Malaysia and beyond.

Perhentian Kecil vs Besar: Which Island Should You Choose?

The classic debate, Perhentian Kecil vs Besar, comes down to your travel style.

Kecil is the backpacker hub, with cheap guesthouses, fire shows on Long Beach, and a lively atmosphere. Besar is quieter, home to mid-range resorts and a more relaxed pace. Both have stunning beaches, but Kecil offers easier access to the best snorkeling spots right from Coral Bay.

If you want to party, stay on Kecil. If you want peace, stay on Besar. Many visitors split time between the two. This itinerary works for either island, but I have written it for a stay on Perhentian Kecil with day trips to Besar.

Perhentian Islands Itinerary Snorkeling Spots You Should Not Miss

The snorkeling spots around the Perhentians are the main draw. Here are the best ones:

Perhentian Islands Itinerary Snorkeling Spots

5 of the best

  • Shark Point – Just off the southwestern tip of Perhentian Kecil. Blacktip reef sharks, often in shallow water.
  • Turtle Bay – On the east side of Kecil. Green turtles almost guaranteed.
  • Terumbu Kecil – Giant granite boulders covered in soft corals. Look for lionfish and scorpionfish.
  • Marine Park (Besar) – Official protected area with the highest coral diversity. Buoys mark the snorkel zone.
  • Pulau Rawa – Lesser-known spot between the islands. Ask a boatman to take you.

Always wear a life jacket and reef-safe sunscreen. The currents can pick up around the headlands, especially in the afternoon.

Best Time to Visit Perhentian Islands

The best time to visit for your Perhentian Islands Itinerary is from late February to October. The monsoon season shuts down ferry services and most accommodation from November to January. The sweet spot is March to June, when the sea is calmest and visibility exceeds 20 metres. July and August are busiest with European holidays, so book accommodation in advance. September and October offer good weather but fewer crowds. Avoid planning a trip during the monsoon unless you enjoy rain and rough seas.

Budget Travel Tips for the Perhentians

Budget travel on your Perhentian Islands Itinerary is easy if you follow a few rules.

  • Eat at warungs instead of resort restaurants – a meal costs 8–12 MYR versus 30+ MYR.
  • Book accommodation on the spot if you arrive on a weekday; you can negotiate for a cheaper room.
  • Share boat trips with other travelers to cut costs.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle and fill up at your guesthouse (they usually have filtered water).
  • The biggest expense is the ferry and accommodation, so keep those low and you can have a five-day trip for under 250 MYR per person (excluding diving).

Pro Tip

Ask your boatman to take you to the little-known “Rawa” spot near Perhentian Kecil. It is a shallow reef where I once saw a giant moray eel and four turtles in one hour. Not all tour boats stop there, so be specific.

Perhentian Islands Itinerary Diving Packages & Courses

For certified divers, diving packages are available at half the price of comparable sites in Thailand. A two-dive boat trip runs 150–200 MYR. Night dives cost 100 MYR extra. Operators such as Turtle Bay Divers and Quiver Dive Team are professional and safe.

If you are new, the Open Water course includes four open-water dives and all equipment. The visibility and coral health make the Perhentians a top spot for learning. Book ahead in July or August.

Walk to Long Beach: As the sun softens, take the five-minute jungle path over the headland to Long Beach. The trail is well trodden but wear sandals with grip. Long Beach buzzes in the evening with barbecues, fire dancers, and cold beers. Grab a seat at one of the beachfront restaurants and watch the sky turn orange. This is your first taste of island life.
