Things to do in Bali

Ubud and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Meet long-tailed macaques in their natural surroundings amid the peaceful atmosphere of Bali’s lush forests. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is home to more than 1,200 monkeys. As you stroll among them, you can also explore the area’s beautifully detailed temples.

Although guides are always nearby, keep a close watch on your belongings and avoid bringing food or water bottles. The sanctuary is open every day, and an entrance fee applies. Consider pairing your visit with other Ubud attractions, such as the rice terraces and ancient landmarks.

Mount Batur sunrise trek or jeep tour

Mount Batur Sunrise Trek

  • Effort: High; a 1.5–2-hour uphill hike, or 3–4 hours of total walking, over loose volcanic sand and steep, dark terrain.
  • Access: Reaches Mount Batur’s true summit for 360-degree panoramic views.
  • Experience: More rewarding because you earn the view, with colder summit air and a strong sense of achievement.
  • Schedule: Starts around 2:00–3:00 AM. Total hotel-to-hotel time is 8–9.5 hours from Ubud or 9–11+ hours from Kuta, Seminyak, and other southern areas. Groups typically have up to five guests per guide.
  • Best for: Fitness-focused travelers, solo adventurers, couples, and groups comfortable with a pre-dawn climb.

Mount Batur 4WD Jeep Tour

  • Effort: Low; a bumpy 15–20-minute off-road ride to a sunrise viewpoint.
  • Access: Reaches a lower volcanic viewpoint or ridge, bypassing the full hike. An optional one-hour walk to the upper crater may be available.
  • Experience: Comfortable and photo-friendly, often including hot coffee, breakfast boxes, driver-taken photos, Black Lava fields, and optional hot springs.
  • Schedule: Starts around 3:00 AM. Private jeeps usually seat up to three passengers. Staying in Kintamani reduces travel time and sleep loss.
  • Best for: Families, older travelers, mixed-ability groups, couples, and anyone who prefers scenery and photography over strenuous exercise.

Tips

Dress in layers: the summit is freezing before sunrise but warms quickly afterward. Bring a windbreaker or removable jacket. Operators usually confirm pickup times and meeting points via WhatsApp. Many tours can be combined with hot springs or a customizable Ubud day tour.

Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s directional temples, built on a rock just offshore in the ocean—a rock that cannot be climbed or visited. Among Bali’s many beautiful temple sites, Tanah Lot is particularly special and is considered a must-see attraction.

It is believed that Pura Tanah Lot was built in the 16th century following the advice of the influential Hindu priest Danghyang Nirartha, who helped shape Bali’s Hinduism and religious architecture for centuries to come.

Tanah Lot remains an important pilgrimage site and plays a significant role in Balinese spirituality and mythology. Over the centuries, the ocean has eroded the rock on which the temple stands, and it is now undergoing restoration.

Uluwatu Temple and Kecak performances

Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of six key temples believed to form Bali’s spiritual pillars. Perched on a dramatic cliff approximately 70 metres above the sea, it is renowned for its breathtaking setting.

Like Tanah Lot, Uluwatu Temple is also celebrated for its spectacular sunset views.

The Kecak Dance, one of Bali’s most iconic performances, was developed in the 1930s by Wayan Limbak and Walter Spies. Inspired by the sacred Sanghyang ritual, they transformed it into a dramatic retelling of the Ramayana. Instead of instruments, a male chorus creates the distinctive “cak-cak-cak” chant.

Rooted in Balinese Hindu spirituality, the dance symbolizes the struggle between good and evil. The circle of performers represents unity and protection, while fire signifies purification.

The story follows Prince Rama, whose wife Shinta is abducted by the demon king Rahwana. With help from Hanoman, the white monkey warrior, Rama rescues her. Hanoman’s fire dance marks the triumph of good over evil.

Performed at Uluwatu Temple against the sunset, the Kecak Dance combines mythology, spirituality, and Balinese heritage.

Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Tegalalang Rice Terrace features a series of cascading rice fields and is particularly popular at sunrise and sunset. As part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers visitors the chance to explore its lush terraces, visit the nearby Bali Pulina plantation, and enjoy swings perched along the mountain’s edge.

For the greenest fields, visit in March, August, or September. The terraces are also vibrant in December and February, although the paths can become slippery during the rainy season.

Tegalalang Rice Terrace is often included in Ubud tours alongside attractions such as the Sacred Monkey Forest, Tegenungan Waterfall, and Tirta Empul Temple.

Nusa Penida and its dramatic cliffs and beaches

Take a speedboat from Sanur to Nusa Penida, one of Bali’s most awe inspiring destinations. Framed by towering limestone cliffs and surrounded by brilliant blue waters, this stunning island is best explored in half a day or full day visit.

Visit some of Nusa Penida’s top attractions, including the Instagram-famous Kelingking Beach, famous for its T-Rex-shaped cliff and dramatic ocean views, Paluang Cliff, and Crystal Bay, a popular spot for snorkeling and sunset views.

If you have extra time, rent a scooter to explore Teletubbies Hill and the Nusa Penida Treehouse. With countless photo opportunities along the way, be sure to keep your camera ready.

Waterbom Bali for water-park activities

Exciting water slides wind through 3.8 hectares of beautifully landscaped tropical parkland, providing hours of fun and entertainment for visitors of all ages.

An advanced salt-chlorination system is gentle on both the environment and your skin. If you are looking to relax or seeking an exhilarating adventure, there’s something at Waterbom Bali for everyone.

Great for the family or for groups who dont mind crowds and getting wet.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is a serene lakeside temple constructed in honor of Dewi Danu, the revered goddess of the lake. The lake itself was formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 30,000 years ago.

Tirta Empul

Tirta Empul Temple is deeply rooted in Balinese mythology. According to legend, Lord Indra created the sacred spring to defeat the evil King Mayadenawa, who had poisoned the local water sources. Indra struck the earth, causing the water of immortality to spring forth, saving his troops and restoring balance to the land.

Today, the spring’s water is believed to possess healing powers and is used in purification rituals, including the special Melukat ceremony, a central practice of spiritual cleansing and renewal. The ceremony can be found in many of Bali’s top eco-friendly spa resorts.

Seminyak/Canggu for beach clubs, dining, and nightlife

Seminyak and Canggu are neighboring beach towns on Bali’s southwest coast, located about 8 to 10 kilometers apart. The drive usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, although heavy traffic can extend it to an hour.
