Things to do near Doi Inthanon

Doi Inthanon National Park, located in Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand, is one of the country’s most important protected areas. It covers approximately 482 square kilometers and includes Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest mountain, which rises to 2,565 meters above sea level. The park is part of the Thanon Thong Chai mountain range and is known for its cool climate, mist-covered forests, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints.

The park contains several different forest types, including evergreen, pine, and montane forests. Its higher elevations support plant and animal species that are uncommon elsewhere in Thailand, including mosses, orchids, ferns, and many bird species. Doi Inthanon is regarded as one of Thailand’s best bird-watching locations, with species such as the green-tailed sunbird, ashy-throated warbler, and Himalayan bluetail. Mammals, reptiles, and amphibians also live in the park, although some are difficult to see because of the dense vegetation.

Doi Inthanon is also significant for its cultural importance. The summit contains a memorial stupa dedicated to King Inthawichayanon, a former ruler of Chiang Mai who supported the protection of the mountain’s forests. Near the summit are the twin pagodas, Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon and Phra Mahathat Naphaphonphumisiri, built to honor Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. Local Karen and Hmong communities live in and around the park and contribute to its cultural landscape.

Visitors come to Doi Inthanon to hike, observe wildlife, enjoy waterfalls, and experience the cooler mountain environment. Popular attractions include Wachirathan Waterfall, Mae Klang Waterfall, Ang Ka Luang Nature Trail, and the summit area. The park is especially popular during Thailand’s cool season, when temperatures at higher elevations can be much lower than in Chiang Mai city.

Conservation remains important because tourism, agricultural expansion, forest fires, and climate change can place pressure on the park’s ecosystems. Park authorities work to protect forests, manage visitors, and preserve wildlife habitats. Doi Inthanon National Park is therefore both a major tourist destination and an important center for biodiversity, watershed protection, local culture, and environmental education in northern Thailand.
