This itinerary assumes you have seven days and are flying into either Sandakan or Kota Kinabalu. You can reverse the order depending on your flight schedule, but the logic stays the same. Start in one, then move to the other. For this itinerary we are going to start in Sandakan and make our way towards KK.
Getting To Sandakan
First stop is Sandakan, a lively heritage city located on the north-eastern coast of Borneo in Malaysia. This key port and eco-tourism center is easy for travelers to reach, with frequent flights and well-established bus and car routes.
By Plane
The quickest way to get to this part of Borneo is by air: Sandakan Airport (SDK) serves flights and is situated almost within the city limits. Planes frequently arrive here from the capital, Kota Kinabalu and other key Malaysian cities, providing a steady stream of passengers and easy logistics for visitors.
The airport terminal features modern facilities and is well linked to the city centre, so getting to your hotel after landing won’t take long. For more complicated routes, some travellers opt to fly to nearby Lahad Datu, which is 97 kilometres away, but a direct flight is still the most convenient choice.

By Bus
Traveling by bus is a great way to take in the beautiful scenery of Sabah while heading to your destination. One of the most convenient and shortest routes runs between Lahad Datu and Sandakan, covering about 170 kilometers and usually taking no more than three hours. If you’re leaving from Tawau, expect a longer trip of around 330 kilometers, which typically lasts five to six hours.
For those starting from the northern tip of the island in Kudat, the journey will be lengthy but full of sights. Buses travel nearly 400 kilometers in about seven to eight hours, often passing through vibrant districts of Borneo. Most intercity buses in the area are air-conditioned, making even a long tropical ride quite comfortable.

By Car
Driving through the roads of Borneo offers a chance to experience the island’s authentic life beyond the usual tourist spots. The quickest way to the coast starts from Lahad Datu, with a 168-kilometre journey taking around three hours. If you’re leaving from Tawau, plan for roughly five hours on the road to cover 306 kilometres.
Traveling from the northern town of Kudat will take longer—about seven hours to drive 370 kilometres. For ease and flexibility, many tourists opt for intercity taxis or car rentals, which allow you to plan stops as you wish; however, it’s important to agree on the price of a private transfer with the driver before setting off.

Sandakan Town Shopping: This is your only day with the chance for shopping so now is the time for any souvenirs, mementos or just a couple of beers by the water! Shopping spots to scope out include the Harbour Mall Sandakan (for clothing and gifts) and Sandakan Central Market (for local food, products and handcrafts).

Today we start the wildlife trail with visits to 2 (possible 3 – if you think time permits) rehabilitation centers. As you may know I am usually not a supporter of “animal parks and animal tourism” but can reassure you that all three are truly animal centric and fully ethical in their care and animal welfare practices. I did all 3 and loved each of them.
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
The first is the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a world-renowned orangutan conservation facility, located in Sepilok. The center’s primary mission is to rehabilitate and provide a safe haven for orphaned, injured and displaced orangutans, one of the world’s most endangered primates. Their work with the orangutan is aimed at an eventual release back into the wild.
Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre
Next is the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), a rescue and rehabilitation facility. Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world and are only found in Southeast Asia. They are threatened by forest degradation, illegal hunting for bear parts and poaching to obtain young cubs for pet trade. The results of these threats has caused young sun bears found to be living in unnatural captive conditions in Sabah, with no access to outdoor areas. The facility includes large forest enclosures to provide a natural environment suited to the needs and welfare of the sun bears and facilitate their rehabilitation back into the wild.
Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary
Finally the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary offers a safe haven for the indigenous wildlife isolated by the Sulu Sea to the north and encroaching palm oil plantations to the south. Founded by plantation owners the Lee Brothers who converted part of their land into Sabah’s first Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. Now it consists of 500 acres of coastal mangrove forests.

The highlights today are all about the river. You’ll get on a covered boat with an electric motor that hums softly so you don’t scare animals.
