The Ultimate 3-Day Chiang Mai Itinerary: Temples, Nature, and Hidden Gems
This ultimate 3-day Chiang Mai itinerary covers the cityâs best temples, coffee, massages, food, nightlife, and day trips. Discover the old townâs ancient gates and standout temples, try iconic khao soi, explore hidden cocktail bars and night markets, then venture to Mae Kampong or Chiang Dao for waterfalls, tea gardens, elephants, and authentic Northern Thai culture.
Most people waste their time in Chiang Mai just wandering around in circles. But in just three days, you can experience its most incredible sites, temples, and nightlife like a pro. Iâve visited Chiang Mai several times over the last 10 years, and this itinerary will show you how to make every moment count, including how to actually explore the old town without getting tired of all the temples, the most stunning nature spots just a short ride from the center, and where to find Chiang Maiâs secret nightlife spots. Here’s my ultimate 3-day Chiang Mai Itinerary.
Ultimate 3-Day Chiang Mai Itinerary Travel Tips
Start Your 3 Day Chiang Mai Itinerary With World-Class Coffee:
First, start the day the Chiang Mai way… with coffeeâand not just any coffee. Chiang Mai is home to some of the best in the world. Thanks to the perfect mix of altitude, soil, and rainfall, Northern Thailand produces some incredible-tasting coffee beans.
Chiang Mai Walls and Gates
A reminder, as you explore, donât ignore the ancient walls and moats surrounding the old town. They were originally built to protect the city and now make for some of the best photo spots in Chiang Mai. I am always surprised when I ask the question “How many gates did you see in the city?” I usually get met with silence as people realize they kind of just ignored them and walked on through! Your challenge get a photo of yourself as each of the five gates (yes, there are five). You’ve just had coffee outside one of them. You got that photo, right?
Thapae Gate is the most famous section of the wall, and depending on when you visit, you might catch street performers, live music, or even a cultural festival happening right here. Go find the other four! You’ll be amazed what else you find when you you search for those gates. Truly
Temples
My last count of Chiang Mai old town was 27 temples â just in the old town, thatâs way too many to see in one day. So, letâs focus on the three that truly stand out.
Wat Chedi Luang
In the heart of Chiang Maiâs old town stand the ruins of what was once the tallest structure in the city, towering at an impressive 82 meters. Built centuries ago, this ancient temple was a symbol of power for the Lanna Kingdom. But fate had other plans. A devastating earthquake struck, reducing its grand spire to rubble and forever altering the skyline of Chiang Mai. Despite its damage, the temple remains one of the most awe-inspiring sites in the city. This is Wat Chedi Luangâonce the pride of the Lanna Kingdom and still one of Chiang Maiâs most breathtaking landmarks.
Wat Phra Singh
The next temple is known for its stunning golden stupa and classic Lanna-style architecture. If you come early in the morning, you might even catch monks receiving almsâa peaceful and spiritual experience. This golden landmark is called Wat Phra Singh, and itâs just a 10-minute walk from Wat Chedi Luang.
Wat Chiang Man
Hidden in a quiet corner of the old town is Chiang Maiâs oldest temple, dating back to 1296. Beyond its ancient chedis and prayer halls, it offers something rare: a peaceful garden, perfect for escaping the cityâs buzz. This is Wat Chiang Man, and itâs the old townâs most peaceful historic spot.
Unless you are a devout Buddhist, or have a passion for visiting temples on your travels, that’s it! Temples are done! Admire the rest as you walk on by… and feel no guilt.
The Most Unique Massages in Thailand
After all that walking, youâre going to need to rest your feet. And Chiang Mai is home to some of the best and most unique massages in the world.
If youâre on a budget, you can get a foot massage right on the street for about 200 baht, which is probably the cheapest Iâve ever seen anywhere in Thailand.
For a more unique experience, check out the ex-convict massage parlor. Now, that might sound strange, but most of the women here werenât hardened criminalsâthey were farmers. Northern Thailand is part of the Golden Triangle, which was once a major hub for opium production. Many locals were involved in the opium trade simply as a way to make a living. Today, theyâve been rehabilitated and retrained as skilled massage therapists, turning their lives around while offering some of the best massages in the city.
Another unique option is blind massage therapists. Some people say they actually give the best massages because of their heightened sense of touch, which helps them find areas of stress in the body more effectively. There are several massage parlors that focus exclusively on blind massages.
Donât Miss: Khao Soi
You canât leave the old town without trying the ultimate Chiang Mai dish. This is a rich coconut-based curry with egg noodles, usually served with chicken and topped with crispy fried noodles for extra texture. Itâs known as khao soi. Itâs creamy, spicy, and absolutely delicious, and youâll find it served throughout the old town.
There are several places that claim to have the best khao soi in the old town, and sometimes youâll see queues all the way down the street. But personally, Iâve found that standard khao soi is delicious no matter where Iâve ordered it.
However, if you really want to try the best, you must go to Khao Soi Khun Yai. The name of the restaurant translates as “Grandma’s Khao Soi”. You’ll find it at Sri Poom 8 Alley, Tambon Si Phum, Chiang Mai. Inside the city walls. Don’t expect table cloths and waiter service. Do expect big flavor, perfect balanced taste and the best dang Khao Soi in all of Thailand.
Bonus Stop: Sunday Night Market
If youâre in town on a Sunday, youâre in for a treat, because thatâs when one of Thailandâs best night markets takes over the old town. Starting around 4:00 p.m., the streets fill up with vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to some of the best street food in the country. Unlike some markets that focus only on souvenirs, this one has a little bit of everything. Whether youâre looking for a unique gift or just want to snack your way through Chiang Mai, this is the place to be.
Evening: Hidden Upscale Nightlife
As night falls, itâs time to experience a different side of Chiang Mai. While the city is known for its laid-back, no-frills nightlife, thereâs a hidden upscale scene that most visitors miss.
For a truly unique cocktail experience, head to THUUB Bar, an intimate 12-seat spot where every drink is inspired by local villages surrounding Chiang Mai. Expect flavors you wouldnât find anywhere else in the worldâthink coconut rum, garlic-based syrup, and even Thai mushrooms. With limited seating, itâs best to get there early or make a reservation. And I know, I’ve broken the rule about Day 1 being inside the old city walls, as THUUB its actually outside the Old City Walls – but literally only about 6 inches. You will thank me later (your head in the morning may not!)
Bar Time Story
Once upon a time, there was a small village located far away from civilization… Deepest in the woods, down in a bushy valley where the northern ancient culture had been preserved and confined for a very long timeâĶForest was their farmâĶ. wild animals were their feastâĶ Living with gifts of nature was their way of lifeâĶ
One day a young bartender got lost in the forest and stumbled across this long-lost village. From months of living among locals, the young bartender rapidly grasped on to the culture and senses of the villagers special âgifts from natureâ
He then returned to civilization along with his magical experiences. In hopes to share bits and pieces of his gathered wisdom of the long lost village with the outside world.
If fine dining is more your style, leave the old town and head toward the Mae Ping River, where Chiang Maiâs best restaurants line the waterfront. For the ultimate experience, time your visit around sunset. The views over the river are some of the best in the city.
Exploring Beyond the City
Option 1: Mae Kampong Village
About an hourâs drive from Chiang Mai, deep in the misty mountains, lies a village famous for its stunning scenery and world-class coffee. Nestled among lush forests, this small community is home to the Karen ethnic group, who have lived here for generations.
What makes this place so special? Nearly every house is built from traditional wood, blending seamlessly into the landscape. The air is filled with the aroma of freshly roasted coffee. As you climb the steep, winding mountain path, youâll pass street food vendors selling local snacks.
The best way to take it all in: grab a coffee at a mountaintop cafe with panoramic views of the valley below, or sip your drink beside a peaceful waterfall surrounded by nothing but the sound of flowing water. This is Mae Kampong, one of northern Thailandâs most charming and peaceful villages.
The village’s high altitude (approximately 1,300 meters) and its humid, temperate climate create ideal conditions for cultivation. Local production is divided into two main categories:
Tea (Miang): The village was originally settled around 150 years ago with the purpose of growing Assam tea. While the leaves are commonly used for regular tea, the villagers are best known for producing “miang,” a northern Thai specialty made from fermented tea leaves that are chewed as a snack or energy boost after meals.
Coffee: In the 1980s, the village began growing Arabica coffee as part of a Thai Royal Project. Today, visitors can spot coffee plants growing wild along forest paths and roadsides.
In 2000 the village officially added a third revenue stream – eco-tourism. In particular it is a model of eco-homestays where guests can enjoy incredible comfort and hospitality while their hosts show that sustainable and eco-friendly practices work beautifully within modern business. “What about the coffee?” I hear you ask. Where to sample the famous Mae Kampong coffee?
Honestly there are many, and I imagine they are all great. But here’s two I know are awesome! The first is Lung Pud Pa Peng Coffee House, one of the very first cafÃĐs in the village and the perfect place for relaxation. The second is Rabiang View Maekampong, which is perched on the top heights of the village. From its terrace you get a breathtaking view of the rooftops and surrounding hills and rainforest.
Option 2: Chiang Dao Region
For the most varied and unforgettable day trip, head north toward the town of Chiang Dao, a region known for its towering mountains, lush jungles, and hidden gems that most tourists never see.
Start your day with a trip to Araksa Tea Garden, a picturesque plantation where you can walk through rolling green hills, learn how tea leaves are harvested, and even try your hand at picking them yourself.
From there, make your way to Wat Ban DenWat Den Sali Si Mueang Kaen, also known as Wat Ban Den, is a Buddhist temple located in Inthakhin, Mae Taeng district, Chiang Mai Province, one of the most underrated temples in all of Thailand. Tucked away in the mountains, this hidden gem features intricately designed statues, striking blue rooftops, and a peaceful atmosphere that sets it apart from the more tourist-heavy temples. Wat Ban Den (formally known as Wat Bandensali Si Mueang Kaen) is a massive, highly ornate temple complex with a striking blend of traditional Lanna, Burmese, and modern architectural styles, vibrant blue roofs, and the twelve stupas representing the Chinese zodiac.
Wat Ban Den’s 12 Zodiac Stupas.
The original 12 Zodiac StupasIn Lanna and broader Buddhist traditions, people believe their spirits reside in the chedi (stupa) corresponding to their birth year zodiac sign. Pilgrimages are made to these stupas to pray for luck, health, and prosperity. To centralize this practice, Abbot Kru Ba Tuang of Wat Ban Den constructed all 12 zodiac stupas in one location, making it a convenient pilgrimage site. are well-known for their 12 impressive pagodas, each representing a sign of the Chinese zodiac. Local tradition holds that a personâs spirit lives in the chedi of their birth year. Since visiting all 12 pagodas scattered across Thailand is difficult for most people, the abbot Kruba Thueang Natsilo gathered them here in one location so that every pilgrim can pay respect to their zodiac sign in a single spot.
For a midday refresh, stop at the Sticky Waterfalls (Bua Tong Waterfalls), a natural wonder where limestone-covered rocks create a grip strong enough to let you walk up the waterfall without slipping. The water of the fallsA short hike from the waterfall leads to the Seven Colors Spring (Nam Phu Chet Si). This stunning mineral-rich spring glimmers in the sunlight, reflecting rainbow-like hues that make for an enchanting sight. Locals consider the spring sacred, and its tranquil atmosphere is perfect for quiet reflection or photography.â itself is perfectly crystal clear. Itâs one of the most unique experiences in northern Thailand and the perfect way to cool off.
The falls stand about 100 meters tall with a slope of 50 degrees. The porous limestone rocks have a texture similar to a firm sponge, providing excellent grip. Ropes are available in the steeper areas, but overall, the climb is fairly easy and appropriate for people of all ages. You too can be a modern day, waterfall climbing spiderman!
Visit the source of the Sticky Bua Tong Waterfalls!
The Seven Colors Spring (Nam Phu Chet Si) is a natural mineral geyser. Famous for its crystal-blue waters and shimmering, rainbow-like mineral deposits, it serves as the pristine, calcium-rich source for the Bua Tong “Sticky” Waterfalls
Before heading back, unwind at natural hot springs. Finally, end your day in Chiang Dao, a peaceful town at the base of Thailandâs third-highest mountain. As the sun sets behind the dramatic cliffs, youâll see why this spot is known for one of the most stunning golden hour views in Thailand.
Miss this trip and youâll miss some of Northern Thailandâs most incredible experiences.
Evening: Night Bazaar and Muay Thai
After a full day of exploring, itâs time to dive back into the cityâs vibrant nightlife. If you missed the Sunday night market, check out the Night Bazaar, where vendors sell everything from handcrafted souvenirs to some of the best street food in Chiang Mai. Running every night, itâs the perfect place to grab affordable gifts, sample local flavors, and experience the cityâs lively evening atmosphere.
For a truly unique way to end the night, head to Chiang Maiâs Muay Thai stadium for an authentic Thai experience. There are several stadiums in the city, but this one is conveniently located by the Night Bazaar to the east of the old town.
Elephants and Authentic Thai Culture
On day three, you need to really get to grips with the aspects that make northern Thailand so unique.
Ethical Elephant Sanctuary Experience
No trip to Chiang Mai is complete without spending time with Thailandâs national animal, the elephant. But there are sanctuaries all over the countryâso why do you need to do it in Chiang Mai?
Because northern Thailand is where elephants naturally belong. Unlike the southern islands or areas like Pattaya, this region has vast forests, rivers, and mountains, giving elephants the space they need to live as naturally as possible.
Chiang Mai is also home to some of the most respected and ethical elephant sanctuaries in the countryâplaces that focus on rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation rather than tourist entertainment.
When you visit Chiang Mai Elephant Sanctuary, youâre not just seeing elephants; youâre actively supporting responsible tourism. Instead of riding them or watching them perform tricks, youâll get to feed them, walk with them, and bathe with them in a way that respects their well-being. If you want to experience elephants the right way, this is the place to do it.
Authentic Thai Cooking Class
If you really want to understand northern Thai culture, you need to understand its cuisine. Unlike Bangkok or the Southern islands, where food is more influenced by international flavors, northern Thai cuisine has stayed true to its roots with deep influences from Myanmar, Laos, and China. Thatâs why thereâs no better place in the country to take a Thai cooking class.
Chiang Mai is surrounded by farms and fresh markets, meaning almost every ingredient comes straight from the local area. Many cooking schools here even have their own organic gardens where you can pick fresh herbs and vegetables before you cook.
Another reason Chiang Mai stands out: the variety of dishes. While Pad Thai and Green Curry dominate menus in the south, Northern Thailand has its own unique specialties that you wonât find anywhere else. Iâve already mentioned how Khao Soi is one of the best dishes in the country, but thereâs also Sai Ua (herbal northern sausages) and Nam Prik (spicy tomato chili dip).
Taking a Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai is an unforgettable experience that will give you skills to recreate these amazing flavors at home.
